Philadelphia sweeps four-game set over Milwaukee.
PHILADELPHIA - Zack Wheeler allowed just three hits while striking out eight batters in a complete-game shutout to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday afternoon.
The victory helped the Phillies (17-15) secure a four-game sweep of the Brewers (17-15).
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Alec Bohm hit an opposite-field solo homerun to put Philadelphia in front. They would add an insurance run, courtesy of a run-scoring double by Rhys Hoskins, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wheeler got the nod from skipper Joe Girardi to return to the hill for the top of the ninth inning. He allowed Lorenzo Cain and Avisail Garcia to hit back-to-back singles with one out, but Girardi let him finish the job by getting Kolten Wong to fly out and Daniel Vogelbach to pop out.
Brandon Woodruff had a strong performance 0n the m0und for Milwaukee, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 batters across 6.2 innings. His only major blemish was the homerun he allowed to Bohm.
The game's only other hits came from each team's left fielder. Billy McKinney ripped a double into right field in the top of third, while Andrew McCutchen smacked a single of his own into left field in the bottom of the eighth.
The Phillies will head to Atlanta for the start of a nine-game roadtrip, while the Brewers will head to Miami as they try to snap a five-game losing streak.
