(06.29.2021) TinCaps Defeat Loons 6-5 on Curran's Walkoff Walk

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Seamus Curran drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to carry the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 6-5 walkoff victory over the Great Lakes Loons at Parkview Field on Tuesday night.

The win did not come without some controversy, however.

One batter earlier, in a bases-loaded, one-out situation with the TinCaps (23-25) down by a 5-4 score, Ethan Skender hit a weak ground ball to Loons (25-24) pitcher Jeff Belge.

Belge seemed to get Kelvin Melean out on the force play at home, but plate umpire Jennifer Pawol ruled him safe, much to the dismay of catcher Juan Zabala and manager Austin Chubb.

The potential missed call allowed the TinCaps to tie the game before ending it just moments later.

Great Lakes broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning via a Joe Vranesh two-run homerun. The lead was short lived, however, as the TinCaps tied it up with an RBI ground-rule double from Agustin Ruiz and a Tirso Ornelas RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Second baseman Deacon Liput was 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun and two RBIs for the Loons, while Justin Yurchak was 4-for-5 with four singles.

Bobby Miller, the Dodgers' first-round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, pitched four innings of relief for Great Lakes, striking out six TinCaps.

Tirso Ornelas went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for victorious Fort Wayne.

The two teams will meet again at Parkview Field for the second of a six-game series on Wednesday evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 p,m.
