Updated: Sep 23, 2021

2 late homers help Reading seal victory.

AKRON, Ohio - McCarthy Tatum recorded two hits, including a two-run homerun, to lead the Reading Fightin Phils in an 8-4 victory over the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park on Wednesday night.

The victory helped Reading (2-12) snap an eight-game losing skid, while Akron (8-5) has now dropped 5 of 7 contests following a 6-0 start to the season.

The RubberDucks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but trailed for the rest of the game following a four-run top of the third from the Fightin Phils.

Akron and Reading exchanged run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the third and the top of the fourth, respectively, to push the score to 5-2.

Akron brought the score to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, but left the tying run on third base.

An eighth-inning solo homerun from Luke Miller and a two-run shot in the top of the ninth from Tatum added some insurance to Reading's lead.

Arquimedes Gamboa and Dalton Guthrie each added two hits for the Fightin Phils. Alex Call recorded a team-high three hits for the RubberDucks.

The teams will return to Canal Park for the third game of a six-game series on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
