(04.28.2020) Robert Morris snatches Bucknell transfer Kahliel Spear

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

The Robert Morris Colonials added a little bit of depth to their bench on Tuesday afternoon when they landed Kahliel Spear, a transfer from Bucknell.

The news was first reported by CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

Spear, a 6-7 forward, played two years for Nathan Davis and the Bison. In his first year in Lewisburg (2018-2019), Spear saw just 33 minutes of action across 14 contests. He averaged 1.2 points/game, with a season high six points in a January meeting with the Loyola(Maryland) Greyhounds at Sojka Pavilion.

In Spear's second season in central Pennsylvania (2019-2020), the native of The Colony, Texas, saw his role drastically increase. Spear played in 32 of Bucknell's 34 games, averaging 14.3 minutes/game.

The forward was a force on the glass, grabbing 102 total rebounds (3.4/game), including a game-high of nine on two occasions (at Fairfield, vs American). Spear was 52.4% of the field (66/126) throughout the campaign. He scored in double figures twice (10, at Fairfield; 20, vs American), ultimately averaging 4.8 points/game.

Spear will now bring his talents across the state to western Pennsylvania for a consistent mid-major in Robert Morris. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Spear will sit out the 2020-2021 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The Colonials are coming off a 20-14 season in 2019-2020, in which the Colonials were Northeast Conference co-regular season champions and tournament champions. The Colonials were heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the tournament.

Spear joins a talented roster set to defend their conference title. Yannis Mendy, Sayveon McEwen and Josh Williams are the only three players (all graduating seniors) that are known to not be returning to the program.

Bucknell suffered a tough season in 2019-2020, going 14-18. The Bison represented the Patriot League in the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Tournaments, battling to the wire with both the West Virginia Mountaineers and Michigan State Spartans in each respective tournament.
