(06.01.2020) Pitt to host Gardner-Webb in 2020-2021 schedule

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Another opponent has been added to the Pitt Panthers' 2020-2021 non-conference portion of the schedule, a portion that should be soon finalized.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Panthers will host the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs of the Big South Conference.

The D1 Docket, a comprehensive schedule of all NCAA D1 teams, indicates that the date of the game has not been determined.

In 2019-2020, the Runnin' Bulldogs played to a .500 record at 16-16, with an 11-7 mark in Big South play. They played at two ACC opponents (North Carolina, Virginia Tech), falling by an average of 21.5 points in each respective matchup.

During the previous season, Gardner-Webb went 23-12 and earned the conference's fourth seed. In the conference tournament championship, the Runnin' Bulldogs won at second-seeded and defending champion Radford to earn a bid to the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

As a 16-seed, Gardner-Webb went head-to-head during the first half with the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers. Just a year prior, Virginia became the first one-seed in NCAA Tournament history to fall to a 16-seed when they lost to UMBC. This time around, Virginia stormed back to beat the Runnin' Bulldogs, 71-56, en route to eventually winning the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

In the coming season, Gardner-Webb will be well versed in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In addition to playing at Pitt, the Runnin-Bulldogs will travel to play at Florida State, Virginia and Duke, according to the D1 Docket.

Gardner-Webb University is located in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, almost eight hours and 500 miles from the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh. Boiling Springs is a little over an hour west of Charlotte.

The two programs have met once before.

On November 14, 2016, Pitt defeated Gardner-Webb by a 99-80 score to give head coach Kevin Stallings his second of just 24 wins during his two years with the program.
