(06.02.2020) Pitt adds Central Michigan to 2020-2021 schedule

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Another day, another opponent for the Pitt Panthers' non-conference portion of the upcoming season.

Pitt will play host to the Central Michigan Chippewas on Friday, December 18 at the Petersen Events Center.

The news was reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports (via Twitter).

Central Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference. Pitt's last game versus a MAC opponent was last season, when they defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies by a 59-50 score on December 16.

The Chippewas are no stranger to playing in the Pittsburgh area. This past season, on December 17, the Chippewas were defeated by the Robert Morris Colonials, 83-79, at the UPMC Events Center in nearby Moon Township. Central Michigan is set to host Robert Morris at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant on November 28.

During the 2019-2020 season, the Chippewas went 14-18 with a 7-11 record in conference play. As the conference's nine seed, they were defeated by the eighth-seeded Ohio Bobcats in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The Chippewas were led by senior David DiLeo, who averaged 14.5 points/game and shot 40% from three-point range.

Central Michigan enters their eighth season under head coach Keno Davis. Davis, a native of Easton, Pennsylvania, went 1-2 versus the Panthers during his three seasons as head coach of the Providence Friars from 2008-2009 to 2010-2011, when the two schools battled in Big East Conference play.

Davis' lone win over the Panthers came in February of 2009, when his Friars defeated the #1 Panthers, 81-73, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence.

The Chippewas will be well experienced come conference time. In addition to playing at Pitt, they are set to travel to play both the Wisconsin Badgers and the Butler Bulldogs.

Central Michigan University is located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, approximately 415 miles from the University of Pittsburgh. The university is about 150 miles northwest of Detroit and about 50 miles west of Saginaw.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
