(08.20.2020) Barstool wants naming rights for Bills' stadium

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

One of America's most dynamic and ever-growing sports companies is attempting to get its name one of the National Football League's oldest stadiums.

According to Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, Barstool is considering purchasing the naming rights of the Buffalo Bills' stadium in Orchard Park, New York.

In a tweet on Thursday afternoon, Portnoy wrote, "After a brief conversation with those who matter I am here to say we are very serious about buying the naming rights of the @BuffaloBills stadium and will enter the process."

This comes after a release by the Bills on Thursday morning, in which the organization announced it would brand its stadium as 'Bills Stadium' until a new naming rights deal is reached.

Opened in 1973 as Rich Stadium (after Rich Foods), the stadium is the fourth-oldest in the league, behind Soldier Field in Chicago (1924), Lambeau Field in Green Bay (1957) and Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (1972).

The stadium held the name of Rich Stadium from 1973 to 1997. From 1998 to 2015, the stadium was named Ralph Wilson Stadium after Ralph Wilson, the franchise's founder.

In 2016, the stadium was renamed to New Era Field after reaching a deal with the Buffalo-based cap company. That name stood until this July, when New Era was granted a release from their sponsorship deal.

During the 2019 season, the Buffalo Bills went 10-6, earning their second playoff berth in three seasons following an 18-year playoff drought. The stadium has not hosted a playoff game since 1996, when the Bills were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Round.

Barstool Sports, a Boston-based sports company, was founded in 2003 but has gained a significant following in the past decade. Founder Dave Portnoy has over 1.7 million followers on Twitter.
