(07.09.2020) ACC, others will opt for conference-only season

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

The first dominoes in the shaky landscape of the 2020 FBS college football season fell rapidly on Thursday.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, among others, are expected to play a conference-only schedule, per Brett McMurphy of Stadium.

For Pitt, this would definitely take away three non-conference meetings, with two home games (Miami[Ohio], Richmond) and one road showdown (at Marshall).

Pitt was also set to host Notre Dame, an FBS Independent, on October 17, however. According to McMurphy, ACC commission John Swofford said that the conference would assist Notre Dame in playing as many games as necessary, so Notre Dame could potentially remain on Pitt's schedule.

Pitt is set to begin conference play on September 26 vs the Duke Blue Devils at Heinz Field.

If conference-only is indeed the route, here is a potential outlook of a modified Pitt schedule, with a suspected delay to the start of the season:

Week 1 - Saturday, September 26

vs Duke Blue Devils - Heinz Field (Pittsburgh, PA)

Week 2 - Saturday, October 3rd

at Miami(Florida) Hurricanes - Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Gardens, FL)

Week 3 - BYE Week

*Week 4 - Saturday, October 17th

vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Heinz Field (Pittsburgh, PA)

Week 5 - Saturday, October 24th

vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - Heinz Field (Pittsburgh, PA)

Week 6 - Saturday, October 31st

at Florida State Seminoles - Doak Campbell Stadium (Tallahassee, FL)

Week 7 - Friday, November 6th

vs Virginia Tech Hokies - Heinz Field (Pittsburgh, PA)

Week 8 - Saturday, November 14th

at North Carolina Tar Heels - Kenan Stadium (Chapel Hill, NC)

Week 9 - Saturday, November 21st

at Virginia Cavaliers - Scott Stadium (Charlottesville, VA)

Week 10 - Saturday, November 28th

vs Syracuse Orange - Heinz Field (Pittsburgh, PA)

Per Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, the Big Ten Conference and Pac-12 Conference will also move to conference-only schedules.

The Ivy League, an FCS-level conference, announced the cancellation of all fall sports on Wednesday, delaying a a potential football season at least until the spring.
