(05.19.2020) Wife of former Pirate Starling Marte passes away

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Former Pittsburgh Pirates and current Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte announced that his wife, Noelia, passed away following a heart attack.

The comments were made public on Monday evening via social media (Instagram/ Twitter).

In an English translation, Marte wrote, "Today I go through the great pain of making public knowledge the unfortunate passing of my wife Noelia, due to cardiac arrest. It's a moment of unspeakable pain. On behalf of my family, I appreciate the shows of appreciation and solidarity in this very difficult situation."

According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, Noelia was in the hospital awaiting surgery on a broken ankle at the time of her tragic death.

The 31-year-old outfielder debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 26, 2012. In his first Major League at-bat, at Minute Maid Park in Houston vs the Astros, Marte hit a leadoff solo homerun on the game's first pitch.

From 2012 to 2019, Marte played with Pittsburgh, splitting time between left field and center field. In 2016, Marte was a National League All-Star when he hit .311 with nine home runs, 46 runs batted in and 47 stolen bases.

In 2019, Marte's final season in Pittsburgh, the Dominican outfielder hit .295 with 23 home runs and 82 runs batted in.

On January 27, 2020, Marte was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for prospects Brennan Malone and Liover Peguero. Upon baseball's return from the coronavirus pandemic, Marte is expected to patrol center field for Arizona before hitting free agency following the 2020 season.

Condolences to the Marte family during this unspeakably difficult time.
