(05.19.2020) Shaler graduate Art Howe wins fight against COVID-19

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

When someone is from Pittsburgh, their DNA comes with a whole lot of grit. That was evidenced by former MLB manager Art Howe, who is back at home following his return to health after a battle with the coronavirus.

According to ESPN, the 73-year-old was released from a Houston-area hospital on Sunday after being placed in the intensive care unit during his battle with the contagious virus.

During an interview with KPRC 2 in Houston, Howe said that he began experiencing symptoms on May 3. Given Howe's older age, he was seen as a vulnerable target for the virus to pry on. Howe, however, proved the virus wrong.

Howe was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from Shaler Area High School in 1965. Following a college career at the University of Wyoming in which Howe split his time between the football field and the baseball diamond, the Pittsburgh native got his first crack at the big leagues with his hometown team.

In addition to playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1974-1975), Howe also spent time on the field with the Houston Astros (1976-1982) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1984-1985), According to Baseball Reference, he finished his playing career with a .260 batting average, 43 home runs and 293 runs batted in.

Howe began his Major League managerial career with the Houston Astros in 1989 and stayed in Houston until 1993, where he complied a 392-418 W-L record. Howe also managed the Oakland Athletics from 1996 to 2002 (600 W-533 L) and the New York Mets for the 2003 and 2004 seasons (137 W-186 L).

Howe is often remembered for his role as the Athletics' manager during the Moneyball (2011) film, where he was portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

In his 14 seasons as a big-league Manager, Howe produced a record of 1129 wins and 1137 losses.

Howe also served as a coach with the Texas Rangers from 1985 to 1988 and the Colorado Rockies in 1995 prior to returning to Texas for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Congratulations to Art Howe on a successful recovery!
