(08.09.2020) Pirates make flurry of weekend roster moves

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Trying to find any type of spark to get back on the winning track, the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a handful of roster moves on Sunday.

Phillip Evans was placed on the 45-day injured list, effectively ending his season, following a collision with Gregory Polanco in Saturday's loss to the Detroit Tigers.

To this point, Evans had enjoyed a breakout campaign, batting .359 with a home run and a team-leading nine runs batted in. Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Evans suffered a broken jaw and a concussion as a result of the collision.

Nick Mears, who pitched an inning of relief in his MLB debut on Saturday, has been optioned back to the alternate training site in Altoona. Reliever Brandon Waddell, who has yet to make his MLB debut, was selected from Altoona in Mears' place.

Jose Osuna, who was questionably sent to Altoona following Wednesday's loss to the Minnesota Twins, has been selected to replace Phillip Evans. In 19 at-bats this season, Osuna has hit .158 with a home run and fours runs batted in.
