(07.19.2020) Pirates fall to Indians, 5-3, in first exhibition meeting

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

In front of zero fans at PNC Park on Saturday, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, in each team's first exhibition since mid-March.

Joe Musgrove, who was recently named the team's Opening Day starter, pitched three innings for the Pirates, while allowing just one hit and striking out a batter.

The scoring started in the bottom of the fifth, when right fielder Guillermo Heredia knocked a two-run single to right to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Erik Gonzalez added to the lead when he plated a run on a sixth inning single.

The score remained 3-0 until the eighth inning, when Kyle Crick allowed a game-tying three-run double to Indians third baseman Christian Arroyo. Crick was relieved by Dovydas Neverauskas, who gave up a go-ahead single to shortstop Yu Chang.

The Indians added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with an infield single from center fielder Greg Allen, and would protect the two-run lead en route to a victory.

For Pittsburgh, Erik Gonzalez and Colin Moran both went 2-for-3. Moran, along with Jacob Stallings, Josh Bell and Cole Tucker recorded a double in the contest.

The two teams will meet again for an exhibition on Monday, when they battle at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
