Some nights, a pitcher just has their best stuff. Such was the case for Milwaukee Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff, as he lead a 3-0 shutout of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday at PNC Park.
Over 6.1 innings of work, Woodruff allowed just one run and one walk, while striking out 10 Pirate batters. The lone hit came in the first inning on an infield single by Pittsburgh (2-4) third baseman Phillip Evans.
The scoring started in the top of the fourth, when Milwaukee (3-3) center fielder Ben Gamel smashed a two-run homerun onto the right field riverwalk to give the Brewers a two-run cushion.
His homerun was followed in the sixth inning with a solo shot from second baseman Keston Hiura, who hit his second blast in as many days to add to Milwaukee's lead.
David Phelps, Devin Williams and Josh Hader maintained Woodruff's shutout, combining for four strikeouts over 2.2 innings of relief help.
Phillip Evans was the only Pirate to reach base, walking once while also reaching on an infield single.
Joe Musgrove had a respectable start for Pittsburgh, allowing three runs while striking out eight batters across 5.2 innings. Robbie Erlin struck out three hitters in his two innings of relief.
Pittsburgh will head to Wrigley Field in Chicago to start a three-game series with the Cubs on Friday, while Milwaukee will head home to Miller Park for their home opener with the St. Louis Cardinals that same day.
