Updated: Sep 23, 2021

A young prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates will not be starting his rookie campaign on time.

Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sunday, third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes has tested positive for the coronavirus and will now be forced to miss the start of the regular season.

Hayes, 23, was selected by the Pirates with the 32nd overall selection in the 2015 MLB Draft. He was expected to make his MLB debut this season, possibly sharing time with Colin Moran at third base.

In five seasons across the Pirates' system, Hayes has hit .279 with 25 home runs and 202 runs batted in. During the 2019 campaign with the Indianapolis Indians (AAA), Hayes hit .265 with 10 home runs and 53 runs batted in.

Hayes is the fourth known Pirates player to contract the coronavirus, joining pitcher Blake Cederlind and outfielders Socrates Brito and Gregory Polanco.
