(07.09.2020) Hector Noesi opts out of 2020 season

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

One depth piece of the Pittsburgh Pirates roster will not be taking the mound during the 2020 campaign.

Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, pitcher Hector Noesi will opt out of the 2020 season, with family reasons being the reason relayed by manager Derek Shelton.

Noesi, 33, signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training on December 17. In five innings of Grapefruit League work, Noesi allowed four earned runs and struck out four batters.

In 2019, Noesi appeared in four games with the Miami Marlins. In 27.2 innings pitched, he recorded an 8.46 ERA with 24 strikeouts.

Across six MLB seasons (2011-2015, 2019) with the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Miami Marlins, Noesi pitched to a 5.51 ERA with 303 strikeouts across 423 innings of work.

Noesi was a member of the Pirates' 60-man player pool and would have had an outside chance to earn a spot on the Major League roster.
