In a world so starved for good news in the sports world and abroad, what has happened in the past few days is nothing short of tragic, as Colby Cave of the Edmonton Oilers has passed away at the age of 25.
Cave suffered a brain bleed just a few nights earlier, and was placed into a medically induced coma. He passed away on Saturday morning at Sunnbyrook Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.
Cave, a native of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, made a name for himself with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. He broke out with 70 points (33 G, 37 A) during the 2013-2014 season, while adding another 75 points (35 G, 40 A) during the 2014-2015 campaign.
He was signed by the Boston Bruins on April 4, 2015 and was assigned to their American Hockey League affiliate in Providence, where he played one game before the season's end. Cave spent three seasons in Providence while making his NHL debut with Boston during the 2017-2018 season.
Across two seasons in Boston, Cave registered five points (1 G, 4 A) in 23 games. He was placed on waivers before being claimed by the Edmonton Oilers on January 15, 2019. Cave played 33 games with Edmonton during the 2018-2019 season, recording two goals and an assist.
During the current season, which has been halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Cave played in just 11 games with Edmonton, where he recorded one goal. Cave spent the majority of the season with Edmonton's AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. In 44 games with Bakersfield, Cave registered 11 goals and 12 assists.
Countless prayers for Colby's family, friends and teammates are in order.
Rest in peace, Colby Cave.
