(08.11.2020) Bucs snatch pitcher Tropeano off waivers

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington acted quickly in adding more depth to a depleted pitching staff on Tuesday.

Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the team claimed starting pitcher Nick Tropeano off of waivers from the New York Yankees. Tropeano had been designated for assignment by the team on August 8.

To add Tropeano to the 40-man roster, reliever Clay Holmes, who had been out with a right forearm strain, was moved from the 10-day injured list to the 45-day injured list, which effectively shuts down his 2020 campaign.

Tropeano was originally a fifth round draft choice of the Houston Astros in 2011 out of Stony Brook University. He started four games during the 2014 season with Houston, compiling a 4.57 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 21.2 innings pitched.

He, along with catcher Carlos Perez, were traded to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Hank Conger in November of 2014.

Across the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Tropeano posted very respectable ERAs of 3.82 and 3.56 with a combined 106 strikeouts in 106 innings across 20 starts.

He last pitched in the big leagues with the Angels in 2019, pitching to a rough 9.88 ERA in three appearances. He has a career ERA of 4.51, with 193 strikeouts in 217.1 innings pitched.

Tropeano signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in February, and was assigned to the team's alternate training site prior to the shortened season. He had his contract selected on August 6, but did not appear in a game prior to being DFAd two days later.

In other news, the Pirates announced that starter Joe Musgrove was placed on the 10-day injured list with inflammation in his right triceps.

Musgrove is the fourth starter from the Pirates' original rotation to be sidelined, joining Chris Archer, Jameson Taillon and Mitch Keller.
