(08.26.2020) Bucs acquire reliever Austin Davis from Phillies

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Pennsylvania's two Major League Baseball teams swung a minor trade on Wednesday afternoon, netting the Pittsburgh Pirates some more pitching depth.

During their 10-3 afternoon loss to the Chicago White Sox, the team announced that they had acquired relief pitcher Austin Davis from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Davis made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Phillies. Across 32 relief appearances, he pitched to a 4.15 earned run average with 38 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched.

In 2019, Davis posted a 6.53 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched at the big-league level. He spent the majority of the season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA), where he recorded a 2.75 ERA and earned himself an International League All-Star nod.

In four games with the Phillies in 2020, Davis surrendered seven earned runs while striking out two in three innings. He was designated for assignment on August 21.

Following Tuesday night's no-hitter at the hands of Lucas Giolito and the Wednesday afternoon defeat, the Pirates now sit with a record of 7-19, 9.5 games out of first place in the National League Central.

The team will play a doubleheader vs the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Thursday before heading to Miller Park for a four-game weekend set with the Milwaukee Brewers.
